The Discipline of the Sauna Master — Ethics, Nudity and the Art of Holding Space

Before a sauna master learns to guide the steam, they must learn to guide themselves. On ethics, nudity and the art of holding space.

We usually notice a sauna master in motion. They cast water onto the stones, work with whisks, guide the heat, touch the body and accompany a person from heat into water. The greater part of their work, though, stays out of sight.

It happens before the first guest arrives — while the space is put in order, the whisks and water are checked, and the sauna master settles their own mind. It also happens on the bench: in the pause before the next movement, in the ability to hear a quiet "enough," and in the willingness to release a plan when the person needs something else.

The discipline of the sauna master is the ability to hold the frame of the ritual without taking power over another person's experience.

This strictness is turned inward — toward one's own haste, carelessness, desire to perform and the temptation to believe you know another person better than they know themselves.

The first instrument is the self

One can learn to bind a beautiful whisk, master the whisking movements, the qualities of plants, aromatherapy and massage. All of it is the ground to stand on. What makes a sauna master is the quality of their presence.

The sauna master's first instrument is the self. If their breathing is unsettled, it will be felt in the rhythm. If they are in a hurry, that hurry will enter the touch. If they need admiration, the guest's experience can become a stage. If they cannot accept refusal, an invitation to trust becomes pressure.

Self-discipline therefore includes more than rules:

  • a clean space prepared in good time;
  • a clean body, hands, clothing and working tools;
  • knowledge of heat, water, plants and human responses;
  • the ability to assess one's physical and emotional state before working;
  • precise language without empty promises;
  • the ability to listen when one wants to speak;
  • the ability to reduce intensity when one wants to display mastery;
  • the habit of honestly reviewing one's work after every ritual.

The true test of discipline comes when no one is assessing the sauna master. Is the room prepared with the same care? Is a boundary respected even when the person struggles to voice it? Does the closing receive as much attention as the most impressive moment of whisking?

Guiding and controlling

A ritual needs guidance. A person needs to know where they are, what will follow and how the process will end. The sauna master holds the time, sequence, temperature, transitions and peace of the space. The meaning of another person's inner experience stays with that person.

Relaxation, change and the meaning a person finds in the experience belong to that person. The sauna master creates the conditions in which an experience can happen, and leaves the understanding of it to them.

A good sauna master notices the moment the plan needs to change, and follows it.

Ethics between two people

During a ritual, the sauna master and guest form a temporary relationship between two people. One hands over part of their physical and emotional peace; the other keeps it safe. Ethics in the sauna live in very concrete actions:

  • the sauna master explains the flow of the ritual in advance;
  • touch and significant changes in intensity are agreed upon beforehand;
  • the person may change their decision during the process;
  • silence or freezing is not automatically treated as consent;
  • unwanted touch cannot be justified by “tradition”;
  • the person's story remains in the sauna after they leave;
  • photography and publication are not part of participation and require separate permission;
  • the sauna master does not use their role to obtain admiration, obedience or emotional intimacy.

Consent runs through the whole ritual as a living conversation. A person may agree to heating and later skip the whisking. They may want whisking and skip the cold water. They may feel comfortable at the start and change their mind later. Each of these choices is complete and valid.

When the sauna master receives a person's "no" calmly and without offence, it shows that their authority has matured.

Nudity in the sauna

In the sauna, a person removes more than clothes. For a moment, social image, profession, status and everyday armour recede. What remains is the body — living, imperfect, tired, strong, vulnerable and true. In this sense, nudity can become an experience of equality: on the bench, every body deserves care exactly as it is.

Nudity carries different meanings in different sauna cultures, and in good practice a towel or sauna garment is always within reach. Tradition gains its strength from a respectful welcome into it.

In The Art of Sauna practice, nudity must be free from sexualisation, judgement and shame. The sauna master's gaze and language remain professional. The body is respectfully covered wherever work is not taking place at that moment, and intimate areas stay untouched. Each person chooses the towel, sauna garment or degree of undress in which they can genuinely relax.

Openness comes from trust.

Touch with love

An important idea in The Art of Sauna philosophy is touch with love. Here, love means disciplined care — clear, unhurried, with boundaries. It means touching:

  • with a clear purpose;
  • with the person's consent;
  • without haste;
  • with attention to breathing, skin response and muscle tone;
  • without trying to produce a particular emotional outcome;
  • without using another person's vulnerability to fulfil one's own needs.

The same movement can be technically flawless and yet entirely different in relationship. The meaning of touch is shaped by everything that comes before it: the conversation, predictability, voice, boundaries, the person's choice and the sauna master's inner state. To touch with love therefore also means being able not to touch.

When the sauna master stays silent

The sauna master's discipline can also be heard in their silence. Today there is a temptation to fill every moment of a ritual with explanation, music, affirmation or story. In silence, a person begins to hear their own breathing, the water, the rustle of leaves and what has been resting beneath the noise of everyday life.

A sauna master must be able to stay in silence. A pause makes it possible to notice skin colour, the rhythm of breathing, tension, orientation and readiness to continue. At times, a quiet pause says more than the next technique. And when a person's response in that silence is unclear, the sauna master simply asks.

Mastery lives in the dosing

A ritual's depth comes from rhythm, attention and measure. The culmination is often quiet — the first full exhalation, the feeling that nothing needs to be proved, one still moment in the water.

Mastery reveals itself through dosage. The sauna master begins gently, observes the response and only then continues. A person's boundary is part of the ritual's reality, and the sauna master works with it. A professional knows how to create a powerful experience, and knows equally well how to stop in time, repair a mistake and bring the process to a calm close.

Global sauna culture today

Sauna is experiencing a new wave as a place of social life. The Global Wellness Summit's 2025 report named Sauna Reimagined as one of the year's major wellness trends: urban and nature-based community saunas are growing, younger audiences are looking for alcohol-free ways to meet, and sauna is increasingly combined with music, art, guided heat rituals and cold experiences. Global Wellness Summit.

This development has two sides. On the one hand, sauna is reclaiming its ancient social function. UNESCO describes Finnish sauna culture as living heritage practised in homes and public places, passed on in families, clubs and education, and connected not only with washing but also with inner peace. UNESCO.

On the other hand, saunatainment is growing — theatrical Aufguss sessions with music, aromas, lighting and choreography. In international competitions, the sauna master's work is assessed as a performing art. Aufguss WM.

In our practice, beauty, creativity and performance all have their place — as long as they serve the person on the bench.

Another significant movement is a more inclusive sauna culture: clearer choices between silence and socialising, greater attention to different bodies, cultural differences and accessibility, and respect for each person's right to determine their own level of comfort. Finnish industry quality materials increasingly view a good sauna experience as a complete journey — before, during and after the sauna.

These trends affirm what Latvian sauna practice has long understood: sauna is a place of relationship, culture and community. The more public and popular it becomes, the more the discipline of the sauna master matters.

My philosophy

For me, sauna is a living practice in which the person matters more than the sauna master. The ritual is the visible part — steam, water, plants, touch, song and silence. Beneath it lies the essential thing: for a time, one person entrusts their body and attention to another. That trust is sacred.

The sauna master's task is to be prepared, present and honest enough for a person to encounter themselves.

My work is to create a space in which a person has nothing to prove.

The sauna master tends the fire, guides the steam, touches the body and walks a person to the boundary — with respect at every step. This is where the discipline of the sauna master begins. And this is where the art begins.
